Angels on White

As a photographer I take thousands of photos a month. Some good and some not so good, but every once in while I photograph someone or something that haunts me. I think about the photo all of the time. I print it for myself, frame it and still cannot get enough of it. A lot of the time I can’t even determine what it is about the photo that skrikes such a cord with me. For whatever reason the photo just resonates within me and I just adore the image. That is how I feel about this series of photos. Of course they are gorgeous, but it is something beyond that. I have been trying to determine what it is and the closest I have been able to come is they are angelic.

1

Their family photo is one of my all time favorites. I love how it was so spontaneous, with young William laying in front of his perfect older sisters. I wish I could take credit for that, but he was intent on doing his own thing and it worked. So often I get caught up in capturing that perfect photo when in reality I should allow my subjects to be themselves and let those wonderful personalities come through. More often than not it makes for a better, more honest, photo that will stand the test of time with it’s owners. I can imagine their parents looking at this photo years from now and being able to reconnect with the darling personalities at this time in their lives. So perfect, so real.

Like I said, Angels on White. Each one of them has almost an ethereal look about them. So gorgeous and so innocent.

San Francisco Book from AdoramaPix

I received my most recent book from AdoramaPix yesterday and I am extremely pleased with this book. Their claim to fame is that they use real photographic paper to print the pages of your book. I had read reviews where the people were very happy with the quality of the printing of their books and some even said the paper was too thick. Personally, I don’t think the paper could ever be too thick in a photo book.

1

I was even more please with their packaging than with Blurb’s packaging. It comes shipped in a nice size box and when you open that box you find your book is sandwiched between two sheets of foam paper and two pieces of cardboard and then shrink wrapped in the middle so it doesn’t move around. Theoretically you bang one of the corners pretty hard and it would never reach the book. Like I have said before, the little details make a huge impression with me. I like to know that my book is going to be cared for.

2

I printed an 8″x8″ 50 page book. All of my photos were converted to black and white and I made all of them square. I absolutely love the format and am ecstatic about the printing. Blurb did a fine job, but I wasn’t happy with the way they printed faces. And if you looked close you could easily see the dots that made up your photo. Not so with this book. The quality is fantastic and the tonal range is great. I love how thick the pages are.

3

As far as the quality goes, AdoramaPix is by far superior to Blurb. But there are things that bug me, although none of them actually deal directly with the quality of the book. I hate their software, and yes, you have to use their program. It is pretty easy, but it would be so much easier if we could use our programs and then upload the document or a pdf to them. They don’t offer dust jackets for your book. I really like the dust jacket, especially for a coffee table photo book. Their print wrap on the cover is top notch though. The last think I am not a fan of is the page numbers. You can have 26 or 50 and that is it. I can understand having a minimum, but what if I have 40 pages? What if I would like to add four more?  I had a bear of a time cutting my photos down to 46 pages. (I didn’t print on the end pages.) Other than those things, I am beyond pleased with the book.  I will definitely be using them again and recommending them to others. They have a good selection of sizes, which makes it fun to be kind of creative with your photography.

Jan - It looks amazing. That is really strange with the page numbers they do. Do know there reasoning?December 1, 2009 – 10:33 pm

Ingrid - The reasoning behind the page numbers is due to the width of the spine. Due to the thickness of the paper, if we allow for lots of different numbers of pages we would need to do custom spine widths. By offering 26 and 50 pages, we avoid having to stop the whole process of book making to cut a custom spine. This saves production time and helps to keep our costs down. We are working on a “signature” line of books where we would offer this option as well as different covers, etc., but that is down the road.

Thanks for the review of our books, and if there is any other questions you have, please let me know.

IngridDecember 2, 2009 – 9:40 am

Kirk - Jan, it looks as though Ingrid has explained the reasoning. Thank you Ingrid. Your reasoning makes perfect sense and I expected it was something along those lines. Thanks for your comment.

One more thing I would like to add to my review is the customer service I have received from AdoramaPix. While using their software to build the book I had a few questions and I used their “Have a Questions?” button on the top of their web page and received a reply within 10 minutes. I like that kind of communication and it was reconfirmed with Ingrid’s diligence in finding and responding to this post. I will definitely be using them again.December 2, 2009 – 11:38 am

Mike - I had a couple questions while designing a book last night. I’ll second the customer service comment — I got someone on a live chat within 2 minutes and they walked me through everything. Also had a website issue while trying to place the actual order and got a quick response from @AdoramaPix (on twitter) saying the techs took care of the problem.

I can’t find the link, but I read another review a while back saying that after 9-ish months of constant handling and thumbing through the pages the AdoramaPix book was still in excellent shape. That’s what made me choose them.December 2, 2009 – 12:26 pm

Julie - That is really impressive that she would find that and take the time to respond! And she linked you to a tweet.December 2, 2009 – 1:33 pm

Jill - It’s beautiful! Gorgeous photos, gorgeous book. Very impressive.December 2, 2009 – 1:45 pm

Kirk - Thanks Mike for your comments. I hope it does stand the test of time, and so far so good. It has received quite a bit of use these last couple of days, but that will probably drop off.

Julie and Jill, thanks for the comments.December 2, 2009 – 3:35 pm

DJ - This is a very useful review! Thanks. I’m considering ordering a book. I was wondering if you could describe (or better yet, show in a picture) the thickness of the pages.December 3, 2009 – 1:14 pm

Ivan - Kirk, you may use the Pre-Constructed theme for book/calendar. It allows you to use your own images almost without dealing with software.January 28, 2010 – 5:54 am

Two Darlings

I was spending the Thanksgiving holiday with some of my family and decided to take a couple of my nieces out and get a few photos.

1

Ashlyn is beyond cute. The photo on the right is a stunner. I love the look on her face and the piercing blue eyes. So intense.

2

Lauren is so darling and I was mesmerized by her huge brown eyes. The two of them are so cute together and I loved their boots. I am lucky to have such a cute family to photograph.

Gretchen - OH MY GOSH!! I can’t even express how fantastic those photos are! Ashlyn is just gorgeous…and you can just see Lauren’s personality shining in that darling face. Nicely done! I’d be scared if I were Chris and Emily!!November 29, 2009 – 8:32 pm

Jill - Cute girls! Ashlyn is beautiful!! Emily and Chris are in so much trouble. :0)November 30, 2009 – 2:52 pm

Amy Vercillo - Thanks, Kirk. You made Lauren’s day! You did a fantastic job!!!November 30, 2009 – 5:48 pm

Jan - These two are so adorable! Great pictures Kirk!December 1, 2009 – 9:55 am

Julie - Wow! What a pair!December 2, 2009 – 1:30 pm

Kirk - Thank you everyone for the great comments. They are so cute and I love their interaction together. You can see in the picture of them together how comfortable they are with each other. Amy and Darin don’t have to wait for Lauren to get older to have boy issues. They are pretty much there right now with their other two cuties.December 2, 2009 – 3:38 pm

An Officer and a Gentleman

My older brother, Gus, who is a deputy with Salt Lake Country Sheriff’s Department recently became a member of their Honor Guard. We are quite proud of him and we have talked about doing some photos of him in his regular uniform and his Honor Guard uniform. We had an absolute blast shooting his photo and he was a fantastic sport while letting me experiment with my lighting. Not once did he complain about the cold, and all of us were in warm North Face jackets and hats. Here are a few of the photos from his shoot.

I love these last two. I can’t get enough of them. The lighting is perfect for him and creates this intense mood. I can’t wait to see them printed.

Thank you Gus for letting me borrow you and your willingness to be photographed.

Finally….

This has been a project I have been working on for a very long time. Not so much this specific project or book, but I have been looking for a long time for a company that would print a high quality photography book at a reasonable cost. I have seen the books from Costco, WalMart and Apple, and I must say that I was totally unimpressed. So much so that I never bothered to print one of my own. Why would I want to print a book with my photos, that I take a great deal of pride in, and put it in a book with a crappy binding and even crappier printing? I wouldn’t! But that has all changed.

1

Two weeks ago a design friend of mine sent me an email asking if I have heard of this online book company that specializes in photography books. I seriously almost discounted what he was saying, and coming from someone else I probably would have. But this guy is one of the best designers I know and he is insanely particular when it comes to quality and detail. We went back and forth about the details of the book he had seen and the book he was building and I knew I had to check it out. I got on their website and started to read about their process and was immediately impressed by the design and function of their website. (For all of you non-design types out there. This stuff seriously matters.) Aside from his recommendation, what really sold me on this company was they accepted PDF files and provided InDesign templates. You have no idea what this means to a designer. This is everything. It is control! You aren’t bound by someone else’s thought process or design ideas. How could I go wrong with a company who understood this?

I have been dying to make some of the photos from our Thailand trip into a book. All of the photos were processed and ready to go. Patiently waiting among the nether regions of one of my hard drives for this moment. So that evening I got to work and completed the above book in a few hours. Of course, this entire time I was a little aprehensive. Is their quality going to be good? Am I going to regret throwing $75 out the window? Then again, $75 is a mediocre night out, so what did I really have to lose? So, I uploaded the book without a problem, ordered overnight shipping by accident and began the wait. They estimated the book would ship on November 20th. Two weeks. Not bad, in my opinion.

Yesterday, I was shocked and surprised to receive an email from them saying that my book had shipped and I would receive it today. (Remember, I accidentally selected over night shipping. All for the best, as I am the most impatient person out there.) Well, I received the box this morning and I quickly cut it open. I was beyond excited. Who needs Christmas? It is Christmas for me all of the time. :) The book was wrapped in a nice white padded paper kind of material to keep it from dinging corners. I appreciated that. Once opening that I found that the book was individually shrink wrapped. That was pretty cool too. I could see the slip cover and it looked good. I quickly ripped open the plastic cover and began looking through the book. I WAS SHOCKED! It was amazing. It looked so good. The colors were vibrant and nearly spot on to my monitor. The slip cover was very nice and pages were good too. I, of course, upgraded to the premium paper and was really pretty happy with them. Not flimsy and cheap. The binding was really nice also. It wasn’t a sewn binding, but for that price I could hardly expect it to be.

2

Beyond all of this, what truly matters to me is the way I felt about the book. I must say that I am very, very pleased with it. I must of looked through it a dozen times today and relived our trip each time, remembering things that I hadn’t thought of since last year. That is was is important to me. Reliving the memories. It was fantastic.

The best compliment came from one of the people I showed it to today. I went up to him and said, “Hey, do you want to see something super cool?” as I held the book out to him. He graciously took the book and immediately opened it to the first page of pictures. “Is this where you guys went in Thailand?” he asked. I said it was and was honestly kind of taken aback by his lackluster interest in the book. I thought it was incredible! He continued to flip through the pages (a little too fast for my liking) and got to the ninth or tenth page and stopped. On this page were pictures of Susan and I, and our friends Ryan and Crystal. He looked up at me with a confused look on his face and asked, “Are these your photos?” I was a little surprised and responded that they were. He looked back down and said, “Wow, wow! All of these are yours?” I smiled and said that they were. He immediately went back to the beginning of the book, looking at each photo with renewed interest. He would ask me about certain photos and the story behind others. It was fun to share the memories. He finished looking through it and began going back through to certain pages for a second look. When finished he told me that he thought that this was a book I had bought in Thailand. WOW! Now that is a compliment.

For those of you that are interested in a similar book, here is the website for the company: www.blurb.com. They have their own software so you don’t have to use InDesign and their prices our downright cheap. I have spent most of the evening tonight working on another book. I am so excited and addicted. I can’t wait to get my next one!

Jill - Wow Kirk, it’s beautiful! I’m so happy for you and can’t wait to see it. It really looks amazing. Your talent just pours out from the pages!November 20, 2009 – 11:03 am

Mom - Kirk, I was thrilled to read what you said about your book and I’m most anxious to see it. Jill is right on; your talent just pours out from the pages! I’ve been seriously looking into books from shutterfly or snapfish and yours sounds great.November 20, 2009 – 11:27 pm

Jan - That is so cool! Love the photos.November 21, 2009 – 11:18 am

Gretchen - Love it Kirk! Ummm….Tiffany and I could have told you about blurb at least 18 months ago…but being that we’re not ‘design people’, I’m glad to know you wouldn’t have listened. I was trying to upload my blog and have it printed, but for some reason it doesn’t work. I’m so glad to know you like the quality. I wasn’t that upset that I couldn’t get my stuff to upload because I didn’t even know if I’d like the quality. Now that I’ve read your raving review I’ll have to give it another shot!

Your book is GORGEOUS! You seriously ought to send in some of your stuff to NG. You’re amazing and extrememely talented!November 21, 2009 – 5:54 pm

Kirk - Thanks you! Gretchen, don’t take offense, most of the books I have seen are just crap, so when someone who has seen their quality confirms it it is easier for me give it a shot. One this did not write in my review and think now is that peoples faces are a little soft, meaning they are as detailed as I would like. I didn’t notice the lack of detail in any of the other photos. I am going to try another book at AdoramaPix.com and will let you know how that goes. For the price, Blurb isn’t too bad.November 21, 2009 – 6:24 pm

Gretchen - I am more than happy to let you spend your money and be the guinea pig! Let me know how the other one turns out. I still think you’re a rock star!!November 21, 2009 – 10:16 pm

Julie - Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. I think that Tim was planning on using them to print up his online scrapbooks. Jim will love the padding and shrinkwrap to keep the corners pristine. (One of his pet peeves.) I would love to be able to hold it and pour through the pages, but this is good too!November 22, 2009 – 2:46 pm

Julie - Hey, did you order two or do something fancy to get one standing up while there is another on the counter open to the pictures?

Oh, and your granite is beautiful.November 22, 2009 – 2:49 pm

Kirk - Thanks Julie. I actually ordered three of them. We are keeping one and two are for gifts. I am still enjoy looking through it. It is on one of our side tables in the living room and it makes me smile every time I see it.November 24, 2009 – 1:39 pm

The Last Days of Fall

I am afraid fall is gone and we were super lucky to get this family in before the snow hit. A little on the chilly side, but they were awesome and most of the children didn’t even seem to notice. Oh to be young again.

hodge1

These two were absolutely darling. Completely different personalities, but so cute in their own individual ways.

hodge2

I love the feel to this photo and family. So warm and happy.

hodge3

This whole thing happened spontaneously as the little guy, Lincoln, was running back to have his picture taken. He fell into a pile of leaves and was almost buried. The other kids thought that was pretty cool and before you knew it they were all in the leaves and going crazy. I love this photo.

hodge4

A few more of Lincoln. So much energy in such a little body.

hodge5

We threw the baby in the leaves too. Not literally of course, but propped him in nicely. Benjamin sure loves his Aunt Colleen. Look at those eyes.

hodge7

As darling as always.

hodge6

Lauren had all the poses and is such a character. Stunning too.

hodge8

I love this photo of the whole clan.

hodge9

Brandon and Heather have such a beautiful family and they look so good together.

hodge10

Miss Heidi. WOW!

hodge11

A few more smaller group photos. I could go on and on with more and more photos. It was amazing how many great photos we got in a little over an hour.
