I, like the rest of the world, was extremely obsessed with Apple’s announcement of the new iPad. Watching the video on Apple’s site and seeing Jony Ive talk about the iPad, it made me think of this video I saw a while ago. I love the way he describes the thought process that goes into developing and designing these products that we take for granted. The iPhone totally and completely changed the way I live my life. That may seem like a stretch for some, but it has become my connection with my family, my multiple jobs, technology, news, entertainment, and more. I can’t possibly imagine going back to any other phone out there. I honestly believe that the iPad is going to become that same kind of device. Maybe not in this first iteration, but within the next two years I believe it will be the kind of tool that I cannot live without. That isn’t going to stop me from buying one in two months anyway. So much of that “magic” comes from Jony’s incredible design. Jobs did himself a service by surrounding himself with people like Jony.

I love being a photographer. You get to meet great people, you get to travel, experience new things and hopefully along the way make a good image or two. I came up with another reason why I love being a photographer while photographing this fun family. I love being behind the camera and not in front of it. As I was driving up to this families cabin, where they spending the Christmas holiday, I couldn’t help but get a little nervous as I watched my cars thermometer continue to drop. 15, 12, 10 and finally at 8 degrees as we pulled up in front of the cabin. “Oh, this is going to be cold,” I thought to myself from the inside of my warm car. I wasn’t too worried about myself though. I had a nice warm down parka, wool gloves and hat, and boots. But what about the family? There were thirteen children ranging from a young teenager to a new born. I was pleasantly surprised by how well they actually did. We were in the mountains and luckily we scouted a couple of good locations that were about 50 yards from their cabin. So we were able to photograph individual families and then send them back to the warmth of the cabin. It worked very well for only being 8 degrees.
After photographing all the families individually, we had them all come out at once to get the large family group portrait. This was probably the hardest, as all of the kids had already spent some time out in the cold before. I didn’t blame them for not wanting to come back out into the cold. But they were awesome and we were able to knock this photo out in just a few minutes.
Even with the cold we were able to have some fun. I absolutely love this photo. Granted, it probably isn’t going over the fireplace, but it brings a big smile to my face every time I see it.
It is always fun to see the generations all together. Challenging? Yes, but that is all part of the experience and the photos that come from that moment in time hopefully give a pretty good representation of who that family is. I am sure as they look at these photos in years to come they will remember the cold, but hopefully they will bring memories too of being together as a family for Christmas.
