How Far Can You Go?

This question runs through my head on a regular basis as I prepare for the Salt Flats 50. That really is the basis for any endurance sport where the average person is just trying to see how far they can push their mind and body. ¬†As I have added more and more miles to my workouts I noticed that the mindset changes. It is no longer, “I am going to run for an hour.” It is, “I am going to run until I get there.” The odd thing is that “there” often refers to distances that can take up to 5-7 hours or more to complete and the mind loses sense of time and distance. It becomes a journey until the end. I am sure there is some kind of life metaphor here, but I won’t get into the philosophy of life. Just the philosophy of running 50 miles for fun.
